Scott & Stewart Forest Seedling Nursery

Our nursery, located near St. Andrews, Antigonish County, presently produces 3.5 million softwood and hardwood seedlings annually.

The nursery was established in 1960 by the Westenenk family who grew seedlings for the forest industry for thirty-four years. In 1994, Scott and Stewart acquired the nursery to support their expanding planting programs.

A total of 48,000 ft2 of green house space and 50,000 ft2 of holding space is used to support our production.

Softwood Seedlings for Reforestation Programs

Scott & Stewart is dedicated to growing quality black, red, white and Norway spruce seedlings. Our seedlings are produced from improved seed purchased from the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources. We also grow limited quantities of white pine and hemlock seedlings. Our seedlings are grown in multipot 67 and Jiffy 140 container systems. As well, we grow large container stock for clients who want a larger tree to out grow the competition and survive damage from the hylobius bark beetle. These seedlings are grown for two seasons in a Jiffy 5150-35 container system. They are approximately 2 feet in height and have a root collar that measures 5 mm in diameter at time of shipping.

Native Shrubs and Small Trees

Scott & Stewart produces native shrubs and small trees for both our industrial clients and home gardeners. Some of the species include alders, Red-osier dogwood, sumac, and bayberry. These small trees and shrubs are mostly used by utilities for planting programs that establish shrubs on utility corridors that are compatible with the overhead lines.

Christmas Tree Seedlings

Scott & Stewart produces many species of Christmas tree seedlings. Balsam fir is still the seedling of choice for most Christmas tree producers in our area; however, we grow other species such as Fraser fir, Douglas fir, Korean fir, and Scotch pine. Being Christmas tree growers ourselves, we realize the need for genetically superior, high quality seedlings; therefore, we strive to produce the highest quality seedling for our clients.

In addition, we have the capacity to grow seedlings for Christmas tree growers who wish to secure their own seed and have us produce their seedlings.
